Preparing for your first horseback riding holiday in the Czech Republic: tips and tricks!

Exciting times ahead—it’s your first horseback riding holiday! A dream shared by many, whether it’s a newfound interest or a lifelong passion. Once you’re hooked on the thrill and rush of riding, it’s a love affair for life ;). My own journey with horses began at the tender age of six, and by 2010, at ten years old, I was proud to call one my own alongside my mom and sister. Though she’s since retired, we still find ourselves yearning for the occasional equine adventure on a ranch holiday.

What location shall I go to?

Location is key! With numerous ranches to choose from, each offering different activities, landscapes, costs, and levels of difficulty, it’s crucial to find one that suits your preferences. Personally, I find western-style riding experiences more enjoyable, but it’s all about what floats your boat.

I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing a week-long western horseback riding holiday in the mountains of France, complete with breathtaking treks, horseback swimming, moonlit rides, and even a taste of cowboy life herding cattle. However, the hefty price tag in France makes Czech a more budget-friendly option, offering similar activities and landscapes.

The Eagle Trail Ranch is particularly popular among Dutch visitors, but you may encounter guests from other countries as well. You can find more information on the Eagle Trail Ranch website.

What essentials should I bring?

Packing for a horse riding holiday is a bit different than your usual getaway. Make sure to bring the following items:

  • Fanny pack
  • Travel insurance, cash and visa
  • Helmet
  • Jodhpurs or riding boots
  • Swimming suit
  • hiking/comfortable clothes
  • Phone + charger
  • Riding socks (one pair of socks per day)
  • Cap
  • Riding clothes
  • Toiletries
  • Sunscreen

What type of rider do I need to be?

At the Eagle Trail Ranch it is expected you are an experienced rider, but there are many other ranches focused more on beginners. Most western ranches offer great riding abilities, whether you are experienced or just starting out.

What is different about western riding?

One of the most prominent distinctions between Western and English riding lies in the saddle design. Western saddles feature a higher cantle at the back, tailored for both horse and rider comfort during long hours in the saddle. This design provides a more secure seat, facilitating quicker progress for beginners. Additionally, Western saddles boast handy pockets, ideal for carrying essentials like water, food, clothing, and other necessities over extended distances.

What are the costs?

The cost is 671 euros per person from Saturday to Sunday, covering lodge accommodation with breakfast, lunch, and dinner (excluding drinks). This is considerably affordable compared to other horse riding holidays in Europe, which typically range from 1000 to 2000 euros per week. Additionally, drinks in the Czech Republic are notably inexpensive, with a beer costing around 2 euros or 2.15 dollars—making it a delightful indulgence after a day in the saddle!

What type of activities and accommodation can I expect?

Accommodation options include rooms for 1 to 4 people, each equipped with a private bathroom. Camping on the farm is also an option. The package includes 8 days and 7 nights in a double room with full board, including 6 days of horseback riding for approximately 3-5 hours per day.

The riding routes traverse fields, streams, and dense forests, showcasing the beauty of the Eagle Mountains. There will be stops along the way to enjoy scenic views and have lunch. You’ll also get to indulge in Czech cuisine, with a stop at a café on the last day (Friday) for a taste of local delights.

Additionally, various activities can be organized, including disco nights, karaoke, mechanical bull rodeos, and cozy evenings by the fire munching on marshmallows.

The Czech Republic is a must-visit destination, often overlooked in Europe. While Prague remains one of my favorite European cities, I hadn’t considered exploring the country’s rural areas until now. Whether I return for another horse riding adventure or other reasons, I’m certain to come back to this beautiful country!
